The Passing Place

Urban Acupuncture on the Union Canal

MLA - Year 1 | Spring 2022 | Location: Union Canal - Edinburgh, Scotland | Course: Landscape Design for Health and Wellbeing

Project Description

Using BlueHealth Environmental Assessment Tools we uncovered a tremendous amount of user experience research that led us to recommend that our design intervention help human and nonhuman experiences by improving accessibility, safety and reduction in pollution.

I designed a  Passing Place – an extension of a hard surface paving area in order to allow people, walking, running or cycling to quickly step off to the side. Sectioning off a designated area with a hard stable surface is a necessary safety precaution to prevent people from stepping off onto unstable vegetation or near the canal side where there is barely any room.

Additionally, small seats and fragrant evergreen shrubs and perennials will be planted. This will provide older people or the disabled opportunities to rest, while simultaneously creating a more enjoyable experience with lush evergreen vegetation and fragrant flowers.
