Spaciousness & Seclusion
Granton Walled Garden
MLA - Year 1 | Fall 2022 | Location: Edinburgh, Scotland | Course: Landscape Architecture Design: Context & Grounding
Project Description
Granton Walled Garden is a 15th century walled garden located in Granton, a coastal and underdeveloped area of Edinburgh. The assignment was to redesign Granton Walled Garden taking into consideration its rich history and community paired with a technical detail design packet and catalogue of materials of a 1:50 section of the site
Granton Walled Garden is a beautifully divergent pocket that seems to be untouched by the modern world surrounding it. Upon entering the garden one is sheltered from the elements and feels a sense of peace and tranquility, as if escaping the everyday by stepping back in time.
I focused my design in creating these pockets of secluded enclosed spaces that contrast with the more open and spacious areas in order to give visitors the feelings of privacy and escape, to unwind and relax from their everyday lives. Additionally these pockets evoke a sense of curiosity, not knowing what is around the corner, which fosters a child-like sense of imagination and belief that helps contribute to the magical, wonderland quality of the garden.
Detail Design Packet
Technical detail design packet containing planting plans, construction details, illustrated index, sustainability and maintenance statements etc… Below is just a sampling of the larger detail design packet that was constructed.
Catalogue Entries
As part of the assignment we had to create our own catalogue entries of all materials used. I chose to design my own unique catalogue entry format in a visually appealing and easily digestible manner. This is just a sampling of corresponding catalogue of all plant materials and hard materials used.
Group Research
Group led research was conducted in the first half of the course in order to help inform our design work. A group booklet was compiled of our findings; below is a small sampling of this booklet. While I contributed to group work as well I was also was in charge of compiling all individual information into a large 100 page group booklet. I came up with the overall visual style and redesigned each members page in order to look visually cohesive.
